Chapter 16

Slipping into the pew beside Hannah, Peg right behind her, Bobbie fought the urge to survey the church sanctuary. Her girlfriend cast mother and daughter a welcoming smile. The Sunday worship service began. Weeks since the incident with the Camaro, Bobbie mentally chastised herself when she eventually surrendered and allowed her eyes to wander over the congregation. Fidgeting in earnest, she returned her focus to the pastor.

“Get your mind on the sermon, Bobbie, not romance.”

Wasn’t God a romantic? She considered various Bible characters like Ruth and Boaz, Rebecca and Isaac. She tabled the thought, again shifting attention to the front.

The service over, Hannah turned to Bobbie. “Would you like to come to a rodeo next Saturday? It’ll be an early Fourth of July celebration.”

“Yes, she can,” Peg put in when her daughter hesitated.

“Mom, I’ve been taking off too much time lately. It’s your turn.”

“Nonsense.” Peg waved off her comment. “You’ve worked hard and deserve every break you can get. After all, it is summer and sunshine.” She shook a finger in her face. “You’ve worked plenty of Saturdays lately.”

“But what about your summer?”

“The way I see it, that’s why we have Mandy and Jill. Both have proven they’re more than capable of tending the store while we’re away.”

Bobbie’s brows slanted. “So, in other words, you’ve already made plans of your own.”

“I have,” was Peg’s pert reply.

“Okay, fine.” She turned to her girlfriend. “Count me in.”

“Awesome.” Hannah snatched a sheet of paper out of her Bible and began writing. “Here are the directions to the rodeo. It’s not too far, but you may want to consider getting a motel the day of the rodeo. That way you won’t be too tired driving the following day, especially since it doesn’t start until 7 p.m.”

“How about you, Peg?” Hannah peered at the older woman. “Would you be interested in going?”

The woman’s eyes twinkled. “No, thank you. Sam’s invited me to a picnic.”

Speechless, Bobbie couldn’t imagine her mother making plans that included a man.

“Good for you.” Hannah grinned.

Peg returned the smile and colored. “He’s a very nice man and easy to be around. I’ll say no more.” She gave the women a motherly expression, eyes narrow. “Neither of you dare read more into this. Not one word.” She peered over Hannah’s shoulder and fluttered a hand. “He’s waiting near the door. Bye.”

They watched her walk away.

Bobbie bit her lower lip. “I’m like shocked by my mother’s behavior.”

“Why?” Hannah snorted. “You expect her to walk around in black clothes like someone in mourning?”

Her girlfriend shook her head. “No, nothing like that. It’s just that I never expected her to think about men, you know, a relationship.”

“Your mom is a sweetheart and obviously moving on. What guy wouldn’t be interested?” Hannah sighed. “Well, I’ve got to get home. I’ll see you next Saturday, okay?”

“Sure.” Alone, Bobbie squelched the anger that boiled inside. “Thanks a lot, dad.” She scurried through the sanctuary doors into the near-empty foyer.

Lost in thought, she was brought out of her deliberation by a familiar voice.
